Spectacle Of Ritual — Kali Malone
Kali Malone’s “Spectacle Of Ritual” comes from The Sacrificial Code, catalogued years before Burning Song. Arcana says canon form had dominated much of Malone’s organ work, but she set it aside for the newer album. Hear this earlier recording first. When we reach Burning Song, you can decide what the two records suggest about that change. Hear Spectacle Of Ritual by Kali Malone.
Grieving Figure — Kali Malone
“Grieving Figure” brings us to Burning Song. Malone recorded the album at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche, playing its Bach Organ with Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O’Malley on bowed acoustic guitar. They’d worked together before on Malone’s Does Spring Hide Its Joy; Arcana says the trio developed a deep-listening connection through that work. Over two late nights at the church, engineer Francesco Donadello placed more than 20 microphones around the room and close to the instruments. Hear Grieving Figure by Kali Malone.
Map The Path — Kali Malone
Bach is buried beneath the Leipzig church where Kali Malone recorded Burning Song. Arcana says she left canon form behind for the album, and hears its pieces unfolding more gradually and speaking more declaratively. “Map The Path” is another track from that album. With “Spectacle Of Ritual” and “Grieving Figure” in mind, what do you make of the change Arcana describes? Hear Map The Path by Kali Malone.
